Songkran Day 2024

Walailak University recently organized the WU Songkran 2024 event in collaboration with surrounding communities to commemorate the traditional Thai New Year and promote cultural understanding. The event, which took place on April 18th, 2024, featured a wide range of activities and festivities designed to preserve and celebrate the beauty of Thai customs.

The celebration began with a traditional Buddhist ceremony in the morning, where monks from local temples performed rituals and offered blessings for the New Year. This was followed by a community almsgiving, where participants offered food and necessities to the monks, fostering a spirit of generosity and community.

Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed various cultural performances, including traditional Thai dance, music, and drama. These performances showcased the rich cultural heritage of Thailand and provided an opportunity for students and community members to engage with and appreciate these artistic expressions.

One of the highlights of the event was the water-splashing activity, a beloved Songkran tradition symbolizing the washing away of bad luck and the welcoming of good fortune. Participants of all ages joined in the fun, splashing water on each other and enjoying the festive atmosphere.

In addition to the cultural performances and water-splashing activities, the event featured traditional Thai games, food stalls offering local delicacies, and a beauty pageant celebrating traditional Thai attire. The pageant contestants, dressed in elegant Thai costumes, competed for the title of Miss Songkran, adding an element of excitement and glamour to the festivities.

The WU Songkran 2024 event also included educational booths and workshops where attendees could learn about Thai history, traditions, and crafts. These interactive sessions aimed to deepen participants' understanding of Thai culture and foster a sense of pride in their heritage.
