Embracing unknown challenges can lead to unforeseen rewards

Exchange Student Experience in Taiwan

We live in a comfort zone filled with familiar things and comfortable situations. We enjoy the security brought by this circle, but at the same time, we are limited in the possibility of development. Therefore, we need to bravely step out of the comfort zone and meet the unknown challenges.Taiwan Exchange Gains and Insights Through participating in the exchange programme in Taiwan, I have realised that being brave enough to take on challenges is not an easy task, but a catalyst for growth.

As a second year student from China studying at Walailak University International College, I have always had the dream of going abroad on an exchange programme, especially to experience different cultures, educational styles and life, but being someone who likes to stay in my comfort zone, I decided to give myself a little bit ofcourage to be able to go to an unfamiliar environment. This was my first time to participate in an exchange programme, and it was an unforgettable experience in my life. 2024, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to participate in an exchange programme in Taiwan, and I came to Taipei National Shih Chien University for a six-month exchange study. In these six months, my biggest gain is the insight, the eyesight. I gained the opportunity to communicate with my peers from all over the world, and made friends with my roommate from Singapore, and we still kept chatting after the exchange ended. I realised that being brave enough to step out of your comfort zone not only opens up your horizons, but also inspires latent courage and ability.

At Taipei Shih Chien University, I studied seven courses, including Supply Chain Management, International Marketing Management, and Accounting, which greatly enriched my theoretical knowledge and practical skills in international business and management. Completing group assignments with classmates from different countries and regions was the most valuable part of my learning experience. These group assignments not only taught me how to communicate and collaborate effectively in a multicultural environment, but also enhanced my problem-solving and teamwork skills through real-life business case studies.

In addition to the academic gains, I also gained a lot from my daily life in Taiwan. In Taipei, there would be Taiwanese classmates or strange uncles and aunts who would ask me, "Why did you choose to come to Taiwan for exchange?"My answer is "because of the food, I want to come to Taiwan to eat the most traditional Taiwanese food". I prefer to use food to explore a new environment. In Thailand, I would go to a traditional Thai restaurant to eat Thai food, and I had Pad Thai as my first meal in Thailand. In Taipei, my friends and I choose beef noodles for our first meal.I often explore Taipei's restaurants with my friends and try famous Taiwanese snacks - oyster omelette, pearl milk tea and marinated pork rice, etc. These traditional cuisines not only give me a taste of Taiwan's local specialities, but also let me appreciate the culture and history behind the food.Through these different eating experiences, I gradually understood that food is not only satisfying the appetite, but also epitomising the culture of a region.

(Tried a lot of food together)

In Taiwan, I also participated in gatherings with friends from different countries, having picnics and chatting with friends at the end of a week's study on the weekends. At those gatherings, I listened to various languages and stories, shared each other's cultures and customs, and began to realise that despite our different backgrounds, we are inexpressibly connected to each other in our pursuit of knowledge and happiness. I learnt to appreciate the nuances of different cultures and to value the friendships with my new friends even more. It is an experience that I know will be a precious treasure in my life. In interacting with different cultures, I have learnt that language is only a part of communication, and that what really matters is mutual understanding and respect. Through these experiences, I deeply appreciate the power of cultural exchange, which not only expands my thinking, but also makes me more open and tolerant in my interactions with others. My time in Taipei was like a spiritual feast that made me realise that in this diverse and complex world, everyone is a unique storyteller. I learnt to listen and to find empathy in other people's stories. We celebrated Christmas together, and celebrated New Year's Eve with a trip to Taipei 101 to watch the fireworks. Each image is a precious moment of my brave experience in my twenties.

(Meeting up with new friends for the weekend, we headed to Taipei 101 together on the night of 31 December and looked up at the gorgeous fireworks in the night sky as we counted down to the hope and joy of the New Year!)

In addition, the rich natural landscape of Taipei also makes me linger.During holidays, I go hiking with my friends to experience the magnificence and serenity of Taiwan's landscapes.Standing on the top of a mountain overlooking the whole of Taipei, I deeply felt the power and beauty of nature, and I wouldn't choose to go hiking on weekends if I were alone, it's tiring to hike, but it's a precious memory with friends instead.During those times with my friends, I also learnt how to balance life and relaxation in the midst of intense study. We often shared the pleasure of books in a corner of the library and found hidden cafes in the corners of the city to enjoy a quiet afternoon. These experiences have taught me that even the most ordinary day can be made extra meaningful by the company of friends.

(We went to Yangmingshan together, and while hiking the kind aunts enthusiastically shared our eggs, their warmth and care seemed to be the unique temperature of the city of Taipei.)

One of my favourite sayings is that life is only 30,000 days, and what matters is how to make each moment shine with extraordinary light. Therefore, every day in Taipei, I try my best to experience and learn new things to fill my life with colour and vitality.Whether it's exploring every corner of the city, trying different cuisines, or sharing joys and sorrows with friends, I put my heart and soul into it and cherish every experience because I know that these will be my precious memories.I hope that everyone will have the courage to step out of their comfort zone, and that brave people will enjoy the world first, leaving their own unique and distinctive footprints in their youthful years.Every day in Taipei, I try my best to experience and learn new things to fill my life with colour and vitality.I am convinced that it is this courage and love of life that has allowed me to grow and transform in the vibrant city of Taipei.Every adventure and exploration is like a baptism for the soul, making my world wider and my understanding of the multifaceted and wonderful nature of life more profound.
