WUIC and CAS Kickstart Tha Sala Global Neighbour 2023

On Saturday 24 June 2023, 8.30 AM – 6.30 PM, Dr Wasin Praditsilp, FHEA, Head of Social Engagement Project, Lect. Medina Adulyarat, Hnin Hsu Yi, Vikram Baskar, from Walailak University International College (WUIC), Ms Nuanpit Meedaycha and her team from Centre for Academic Services (CAS) Walailak University, organized the first field research for the “Tha Sala Global Neighbour” Social Engagement Project (SEP), at the business district in front of the University.

The SEP crew first visited Charmpoon Halal Boat Noodles (https://goo.gl/maps/LK2ecYSBumm6nkARA). This noodles restaurant is ranked the first by Thai and international students for delicious boat-noodle soup. Khun Noona, the owner of the restaurant, has many international clients, particularly Malaysians and Indonesians. She has a plan to develop her English menu as well as staff members’ English skills; this SEP will contribute to her staff quality and allow her to connect tighter with her clients.

and Kah Da Kai Sap (https://goo.gl/maps/UBdGL7UQCr8WLDjW6). The owners of both restaurants, khun Parinya and kah Da, are willing to participate in the program. These two restaurants have different groups of international clients – the first is mostly Western while the latter is mostly SEA clients, those who look for Halal food around campus. The owners and few staff members could communicate in English and see this SEP as the opportunity to build confidence among the staff members.

Loong Yai Steakhouse (https://goo.gl/maps/AFY6e2fg66JK7fnr9),

and Bung Bow Teahouse (https://goo.gl/maps/WF9hyXRBRSx53X7B7). All restaurants have frequent experiences with international clients, either staff and students at Walailak University or foreign travelers to Tha Sala. The owners, khun Ing, khun Som, and khun Bung, respectively, are happy to welcome international clients, and share with the team what types of food are popular among the international clients. All restaurants are delighted to have English menus and English signs as well as a chance to develop English for restaurant services with other restaurants in the first batch of the program.

The 10 restaurants in front of Walailak University are willing to support the SEP as much as possible and would like to be models for other restaurants in the following years. They were selected by international people around campus and Tha Sala as the most visit or most want-to-try restaurants by foreigners. The SEP crew visited the first 7 restaurants when the last 3 (Uno Leng Sap, Ubrger, and ORCA Café) will be visited on Tuesday 27 June 2023, 10 AM – 1 PM.

This SEP aims to develop quality education among Thai and International students at Walailak University, and education outreach activities beyond campus. The representatives from all restaurants – local business partners – in our community will be trained by WUIC students to service international clients, extending their chances to find new clients while maintaining the service quality for current clients.
